Healthy vs. Injured Brain

As a Personal Injury Law Firm in Sacramento, Ca, we know that when someone has been injured in an accident, they have a whole bunch of questions that need to be answered. This is especially true when dealing with complex injuries, such as a traumatic brain injury. To understand more clearly what happens when a brain is injured in an accident, take a look at how a healthy brain and an injured brain are described by the Brain Injury Association:

A healthy brain

To understand what happens when the brain is injured, it is important to realize what a healthy brain is made of and what it does. The brain is enclosed inside the skull. The skull acts as a protective covering for the soft brain. The brain is made of neurons (nerve cells). The neurons form tracts that route throughout the brain. These nerve tracts carry messages to various parts of the brain. The brain uses these messages to perform functions. The functions include our coordinating our body’s systems, such as breathing, heart rate, body temperature, and metabolism; thought processing; body movements; personality; behavior; and the senses, such as vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. Each part of the brain serves a specific function and links with other parts of the brain to form more complex functions.

An injured brain

When a brain injury occurs, the functions of the neurons, nerve tracts, or sections of the brain can be affected. If the neurons and nerve tracts are affected, they can be unable or have difficulty carrying the messages that tell the brain what to do. This can change the way a person thinks, acts, feels, and moves the body. Brain injury can also change the complex internal functions of the body, such as regulating body temperature; blood pressure; bowel and bladder control. These changes can be temporary or permanent. They may cause impairment or a complete inability to perform a function.

Brain Injury Treatment - Hope in Sacramento

Brain injuries have affected many in the Sacramento region and throughout California through traumatic accidents. At the Law Offices of Moseley Collins we know the implications and suffering of those who experience such a tragedy.

In continuing my explanation of what a brain injury is, I would like to discuss some treatment options to you.

Brain injury treatment…

In general, most people who experience a brain injury will need to undergo some rehabilitation to regain some of the functions lost from their accident. Many people will need to learn how to do the most basic of skills, such as talking and walking.

My youngest brother, actually went through this possibility himself, after falling two stories and landing head first onto the tile below. In a coma for eight days, doctors told us that Beau would most likely need to learn to talk and walk all over again. By the grace of God, Beau did not need to do this type of rehabilitation.

Surgery is another option for people who suffer from brain injuries. The surgical procedure will differ from patient to patient, with options from removing damaged portions of the brain to draining blood if caught between the skull and brain.

There is hope in such a dire situation as this. Please give us a call if you or a loved one has experienced such an injury in an accident. We are here to help.

Until next time…

Brain Injury Symptoms

If you or a loved one have been injured in a serious accident, please be aware of any brain injury symptoms. As I said in my previous blog, brain injury can occur from a direct hit (such as a head hitting a windshield in a car crash) to a non-impact injury (such as a severe whiplash). Because of the wide variety of accidents resulting in this type of injury, there are often times when a brain injury may go unnoticed. It is of dire importance that if you believe you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury, that you get help immediately.

The symptoms...

Some of the most common symptoms of brain injury are often found in a person's cognitive ability and changes in their personality.

Our cognitive abilities are our skills to reason, discern, memorize and perceive. With a brain injury, often there is a decrease in the ability to do things using the skills listed above, such as remembering items and making sound decisions.

Common changes in personality are depression, irritability and emotional outbursts.

These two symptoms (decrease in cognitive ability and change in personality) are just two of many. Depending on the accident and where the victim was injured, different parts of the brain will have been affected. For example, if you had a brain injury from a hit on the forehead, you might have problems with simple movements, whereas, a hit on the back of your head might produce hallucinations.

Head and Brain Injury Causes

As a Personal Injury Law Firm in the Sacramento area, we know that many people suffer from brain or head injuries as a result of their accident. We also know how exhausting it can be trying to understand all the new terms and implications that come with a diagnosis.

This being so, I decided to give you a brief overview of brain/head injuries in my next couple of blogs. I hope that some of this information comes in handy and can help you see a clearer picture of what may have occurred during and as a result of your injury.

How it occurs...

A brain/head injury occurs from the brain compressing, twisting, or distorting inside the skull. This can happen when the skull hits an object, such as a windshield or the ground. Often bone, muscle and vertebrae tissue is also damaged in a severe head injury.

If the impact is strong enough, the accident can cause the skull to break and directly hurt the brain. This is often called a "traumatic brain injury".

Lastly, a brain/head injury can be caused even if there is no direct impact. In cases where there is rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head, the brain may be moved around in the skull, causing nerves to break and damage to the brain tissue. This type of injury is often found in severe whiplash.

I hope this gives you a clearer overview of what a brain/head injury is and how it happens. If you have been injured and have suffered a brain or head injury, please contact our law offices for help and advice.
