Spinal Cord Injuries - About

Spinal Cord Injuries can be a devastating result from an accident. In our Personal Injury Law Firm in Sacramento, CA, we have experienced many cases in which the person injured suffered this loss. I believe it is important to give a brief overview of the injury, especially for those who have suffered personally or know someone that has. Please know that if you or someone you love has suffered from spinal cord injury in an accident, you can always call us at the Law Offices of Moseley Collins.

What is it?

Spinal cord injury, also know as myelopathy, occurs when the spinal cord is damaged by either a trauma (such as an automobile accident) or disease. The result of the damage is a loss of sensation and/or movement.

In a spinal cord injury, the person has either a complete or incomplete injury. In a complete injury, there is no movement or sensation below the level of the injury.

In an incomplete injury, there is some sensation below the level of the injury. This injury has varied results, in which the person may be able to function better on one side of the body than the other side, feel body parts that cannot be moved, or move different parts of the body better than other parts.

Statistically, about 450,000 people in the United States have suffered from spinal cord injuries with 11,000 new injuries happening each year. Startling, 78% of the injured people are males between the ages 16-30 and 42% of spinal cord injuries are from car accidents.

If you have been in a car crash with a resulting spinal cord injury, please call us right away. We are here to help.

Brain Injury Symptoms

If you or a loved one have been injured in a serious accident, please be aware of any brain injury symptoms. As I said in my previous blog, brain injury can occur from a direct hit (such as a head hitting a windshield in a car crash) to a non-impact injury (such as a severe whiplash). Because of the wide variety of accidents resulting in this type of injury, there are often times when a brain injury may go unnoticed. It is of dire importance that if you believe you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury, that you get help immediately.

The symptoms...

Some of the most common symptoms of brain injury are often found in a person's cognitive ability and changes in their personality.

Our cognitive abilities are our skills to reason, discern, memorize and perceive. With a brain injury, often there is a decrease in the ability to do things using the skills listed above, such as remembering items and making sound decisions.

Common changes in personality are depression, irritability and emotional outbursts.

These two symptoms (decrease in cognitive ability and change in personality) are just two of many. Depending on the accident and where the victim was injured, different parts of the brain will have been affected. For example, if you had a brain injury from a hit on the forehead, you might have problems with simple movements, whereas, a hit on the back of your head might produce hallucinations.

Again, if you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms after an accident, please call the Law Office of Moseley Collins. We are here to help.

Take care...

Head and Brain Injury Causes

As a Personal Injury Law Firm in the Sacramento area, we know that many people suffer from brain or head injuries as a result of their accident. We also know how exhausting it can be trying to understand all the new terms and implications that come with a diagnosis.

This being so, I decided to give you a brief overview of brain/head injuries in my next couple of blogs. I hope that some of this information comes in handy and can help you see a clearer picture of what may have occurred during and as a result of your injury.

How it occurs...

A brain/head injury occurs from the brain compressing, twisting, or distorting inside the skull. This can happen when the skull hits an object, such as a windshield or the ground. Often bone, muscle and vertebrae tissue is also damaged in a severe head injury.

If the impact is strong enough, the accident can cause the skull to break and directly hurt the brain. This is often called a "traumatic brain injury".

Lastly, a brain/head injury can be caused even if there is no direct impact. In cases where there is rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head, the brain may be moved around in the skull, causing nerves to break and damage to the brain tissue. This type of injury is often found in severe whiplash.

I hope this gives you a clearer overview of what a brain/head injury is and how it happens. If you have been injured and have suffered a brain or head injury, please contact our law offices for help and advice.

Vertigo: Common in Car Accidents & Brain Injury

At the Law Offices of Moseley Collins, we know auto accidents, motorcycle and truck accidents occur every day in Sacramento and throughout California.

Severe car, motorcycle and truck accidents can leave a crash victim with a traumatic brain injury. As a Sacramento car accident law firm we regularly assist victims who are suffering from a catastrophic brain injury. If you ever find yourself in this position, as an auto accident victim with trauma to the brain, one key aliment to watch out for is vertigo. This will assist your lawyer or attorney in representing you.

According to Dr. Kuljit Singh, “Head injuries from motor vehicle accidents or any other kind of trauma would result in traumatic vertigo. Vertigo occurs when sensation from the inner ear, eyes and sensation throughout the body are mismatched.”
